about

The music included herein is the result of adventurous risk taking. The musicians involved (Richard Carr, Caleb Burhans, and Clarice Jensen) played bowed string instruments, (and a little piano) both acoustically and through electronic devices. Every note was improvised. This is like deciding to jump out of an airplane together. The results could be disastrous, or they could be miraculous. In this case, the musicians are all highly experienced composers, improvisers, and performers. It takes an amazing amount of focus, contextual sensitivity, and a feeling for emergent structure to make this work. The session took place in late August of 2022 at Dreamland Studios near Woodstock, NY. Hence the title of the album.
Although the session has a contemplative feeling throughout, we used predetermined musical parameters as springboard ideas for each improvisation. Sun Ritual, Kindness, and The Birch Tree were built on simple harmonic ostinati. Merritt Parkway was based on a more complex chord structure that Caleb invented spontaneously. Satellite, Overnight Crossing, and Deep in the Seventh were built on foundational drones provided by Clarice. On the Shoulders of Giants, and Figures in White were based on electronic textures. Cesair (meaning sorrow, affliction) is a character from the Lebor Gabála Érenn, a medieval Christian pseudohistory of Ireland. The piece features a Celtic flavoured duet with Richard and Caleb at the beginning. The Birch Tree, (also a theme in Celtic Mythology) has echoes of the Emerald Isle. We used crescendi and decrescendi as the foundation for Moderate Swells. When It’s Time to Go in the last dance and it even has a groove.
